How to use the Overtime Calculator
- Type your hourly pay rate in the rate field.
- Type the total hours worked in one week. You can use decimal hours (42.5), hours:minutes (42:30), or a plain number, which is read as hours. The maximum is 168.
- Set the overtime threshold. The default is 40. A blank or 0 threshold means there is no overtime tier.
- Set the overtime multiplier. The default is 1.5, and it can be any number of 1 or more.
- If you need a third tier, open Advanced and type a double-time threshold (blank means off) and a double-time multiplier (default 2). The double-time threshold must be higher than the overtime threshold.
- Read the results, then open “How it was calculated” under the result to see each formula with your numbers.
Use the preset buttons above the form to load typical cases, and Reset to return to the starting example. “Copy link” copies the page address, which stores your inputs so the same calculation reopens later or can be sent to someone else. “Print / save as PDF” prints a one-page record with your inputs, results, steps and the date.
The result also shows the overtime rate per hour and the average pay per hour worked. All figures are gross, before any deduction.
How to calculate overtime
Overtime is the part of your weekly hours that goes beyond a set threshold, and it is paid at a higher rate than your normal pay. The calculator works out each tier separately, using three formulas: regular pay = regular hours × rate; overtime pay = overtime hours × rate × overtime multiplier; double-time pay = double-time hours × rate × double-time multiplier. Each hour belongs to exactly one tier, so the tiers are added together, not multiplied together.
How to work out overtime
To work out overtime hours, subtract the threshold from your total weekly hours, but only if the total is above the threshold. With the default threshold of 40, 45 hours gives 45 − 40 = 5 overtime hours and 40 regular hours. If your total does not go above the threshold, there are no overtime hours. For a double-time tier, hours beyond the double-time threshold are counted in that tier. With a threshold of 40 and a double-time threshold of 48, 52 hours split into 40 regular, 8 overtime (hours 41 to 48) and 4 double-time (hours 49 to 52), which totals 52.
How to find overtime pay
Overtime pay is the overtime hours multiplied by the hourly rate and by the overtime multiplier. The overtime rate per hour is the hourly rate multiplied by the multiplier. At a rate of 20 with the default multiplier of 1.5, the overtime rate is 30.00 per hour, so 5 overtime hours pay 5 × 30.00 = 150.00. The U.S. Department of Labor describes overtime as at least 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for covered, non-exempt employees. Other countries, states and employers use other rules, so the multiplier stays editable.
How to count overtime pay
Total gross pay is the sum of the pay from each tier. In the example of 45 hours at 20 per hour, regular pay is 800.00 and overtime pay is 150.00, so the total is 950.00. The average pay per hour worked is the total pay divided by the total hours: 950.00 ÷ 45 = 21.11. The average is higher than 20 because the overtime hours pay more. All figures are gross, before any deductions.
How to figure overtime pay
Figure overtime for one week at a time, because the calculator works on a single week’s total. Times in hours:minutes are converted to decimal hours first, so 42:30 becomes 42.5 hours. At 18 per hour with a threshold of 40, that gives 40 regular hours (720.00) and 2.5 overtime hours at 27.00 (67.50), for a total gross of 787.50. Check your result against the formula note and your own records before you rely on it for pay.
Worked examples
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 45 h at 20/h, overtime after 40 h | 5 overtime h, gross pay 950.00 |
| 52 h at 20/h, overtime after 40 h | 8 overtime h, gross pay 1,200.00 |
| 38 h at 20/h, overtime after 40 h | 0 overtime h, gross pay 760.00 |
| 42:30 h at 18/h, overtime after 40 h | 2.5 overtime h, gross pay 787.50 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate overtime if my employer uses a different rule?
Type your own threshold and multiplier. Nothing on the page says which rules apply to a particular job, so take the figures from your contract or pay policy.
Why does the calculator show no overtime hours?
Your total hours do not go above the overtime threshold, or the threshold is blank or 0. Check the threshold field, then compare it with your total hours.
Can I enter hours as hours and minutes?
Yes. You can type 42:30 for 42 hours and 30 minutes, 42.5 for the same amount, or a plain number, which is read as hours.
What is the most hours I can enter?
The maximum is 168 hours, which is one week. The calculator shows a warning when more than 100 hours are typed in one week.
Is the overtime calculator free, and is anything I type uploaded?
Yes, it is free and needs no account or sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.
Can I print or share a calculation?
Yes. Print / save as PDF creates a one-page record with the inputs, results, calculation steps and the date. Copy link copies a page address that stores every input, so the same calculation can be reopened later or sent to someone else.
Is this tax or payroll advice?
No. Results are plain arithmetic on the numbers you enter, before any deduction. They are not legal, tax or payroll advice, and rules differ by country, state and contract.
