Salary to Hourly Chart

Look up a yearly salary to see the hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly and monthly pay it equals at your hours per week.

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 50,000 a year is about 24.04 an hour. This salary to hourly chart shows that figure, along with the monthly, biweekly, weekly and daily pay, for 50,000 and for any other yearly salary you enter. It runs in your browser, is free, and needs no account or sign-up.

The page has two parts. The chart lists yearly salaries from 20,000 to 250,000, with one row for each amount. The look-up box above it gives the same figures for any salary you type, with the hourly rate as the main result. Change hours per week to see every row again.

How to use the Salary to Hourly Chart

  1. Type a yearly salary in the “Look up a yearly salary” box. You can enter 50000, 50,000 or 50k. The default is 50,000.
  2. Read the hourly rate in the result. For the default settings, it shows 24.04.
  3. Check the hours per week (default 40) and weeks per year (default 52). Change them if your schedule is different.
  4. Open “More options” to choose the hours-per-year basis. The default uses your hours per week × weeks per year. The option “U.S. federal pay (OPM)” uses a fixed 2,087 hours a year.
  5. Use a preset button above the form to load a common case: 50,000 a year, 100,000 a year, or 72,000 a year at 37.5 hours a week.
  6. Scan the chart rows to compare salaries. Changing the hours per week updates every row.
  7. Open “How it was calculated” under the result to see the formula and your values step by step.

Under the result, “Copy result” copies the result lines with a link. “Copy link” copies the page address, which stores your inputs so the same calculation reopens later. “Print / save as PDF” creates a one-page record with your inputs, results, steps and the date. “Reset” restores the starting example.

The look-up box also accepts a salary written as 60k or $72,000, and the charts below it do not change when you look up a salary.

How is 50k a year turned into an hour?

The rule is annual pay ÷ paid hours in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, a year has 40 × 52 = 2,080 paid hours. So 50,000 ÷ 2,080 = 24.04 an hour. The other columns use the same salary. Monthly pay is annual ÷ 12, which gives 4,166.67. Biweekly pay is annual ÷ 26, which gives 1,923.08. Weekly pay is annual ÷ 52, which gives 961.54. Daily pay is the hourly rate × hours per week ÷ 5, which gives 192.31.

Changing the hours changes the divisor. For 72,000 a year at 37.5 hours a week, the year has 37.5 × 52 = 1,950 hours, so 72,000 ÷ 1,950 = 36.92 an hour. The OPM option divides by 2,087 instead. For example, 60,000 ÷ 2,087 = 28.75 an hour. That figure comes from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management fact sheet “Computing Hourly Rates of Pay Using the 2,087-Hour Divisor.”

How do I look up one salary?

Type a yearly salary in the look-up box, for example 72000, 60k or 85,000, and the page shows the hourly rate as the main result, with monthly, biweekly, weekly and daily pay. Leave it empty to see only the charts. The charts list every salary from 20,000 to 100,000 and from 105,000 to 250,000 in steps of 5,000, each with annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly, daily and hourly columns at the hours per week you set.

What changes if I work fewer hours?

The hourly rate is higher when the paid hours are fewer. 85,000 a year is 40.87 an hour at 40 hours a week (85,000 ÷ 2,080) and 43.59 an hour at 37.5 hours a week (85,000 ÷ 1,950). The figures are gross, before tax or other deductions, and are shown in whatever currency you use.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 50k a year per hour before tax?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 50,000 a year is 24.04 an hour before tax. This is a gross figure, so take-home pay will be lower after any deductions.

Why does 50,000 divide by 2,080?

Because 40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2,080 paid hours in a year. Dividing the yearly salary by the yearly hours gives the hourly rate.

Can I type 50k instead of 50000?

Yes. The look-up box accepts 50k, 50,000 and 50000 and shows the same result for each.

What happens if I work 37.5 hours a week?

Enter 37.5 in the hours per week box. The divisor falls to 1,950 hours, so 72,000 a year becomes 36.92 an hour instead of the figure you would get at 40 hours.

What does the 2,087-hour option do?

It replaces your hours per week, weeks per year and unpaid weeks with a fixed 2,087 hours a year. The page shows a warning if those inputs differ from 40, 52 and 0.

Does the chart include overtime?

No. Each row divides the salary by the paid hours you set, and it does not add overtime pay. Overtime rules differ by country, state and contract.

Is the salary to hourly chart free, and is anything I type uploaded?

Yes, it is free and needs no account or sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Is this tax or payroll advice?

No. Results are plain arithmetic on the numbers you enter, before any deduction. They are not legal, tax or payroll advice, and rules differ by country, state and contract.
