How to use the Work Hours in a Month Calculator
- Enter the Year. Any year from 1900 to 2200 works. The default is 2026.
- Choose a Month from January to December, or select Whole year to see totals for all 12 months.
- Set Hours per workday. Decimals such as 4.5 work for part-time schedules.
- Pick a Work week: Monday to Friday (the default), Monday to Saturday, Sunday to Thursday, or every day.
- Enter the Days off to subtract, such as public holidays. The calculator does not look up holidays, so count them yourself.
- Read the result. It updates as you type. Open How it was calculated under the result to see the formula with your values.
The preset buttons above the form load typical cases: ‘October 2026’, ‘Whole year 2026’ and ‘6-day week, 2026’. Reset restores the starting example. To share or keep a result, use Copy result for the result lines with a link, Copy link for the page address that stores every input, or Print / save as PDF for a one-page record.
The table under the result lists every month of the chosen year, so you can compare months at a glance. Presets load October 2026, the whole of 2026 and a six-day week.
If you take days off, such as public holidays, type how many in the days-off box and they are taken from the result.
The calculator counts each day of the chosen month by its weekday, so it follows the real Gregorian calendar instead of assuming every month has the same number of working days. Working days are the days that match your work week. Work hours then come from one formula: working days, minus days off, times hours per workday. Twenty-two working days at 8 hours is 176 hours. In a week, five working days at 8 hours is 40 hours.
Leap years follow the Gregorian rule: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except centuries not divisible by 400. For a whole year, the average hours per month is the total hours divided by 12, shown before days off are taken away. In 2028 there are exactly 260 Monday-to-Friday days, which is 2,080 hours at 8 hours a day, an average of 173.33 hours per month.
How many work hours are in a month?
A month with 22 working days at 8 hours a day has 176 work hours. October 2026 on a Monday to Friday week is exactly that. Other months have 20 to 23 weekdays, so the answer changes from month to month, and the table under the result lists all twelve months of the chosen year with the days in the month, the working days and the hours.
How many work hours are in a year?
Multiply the working days in the year by the hours per day. A year with 260 Monday-to-Friday days at 8 hours is 2,080 hours, as 2028 is. A year with 261 such days, such as 2026, has 2,088 hours. That is why you may see both 2,080 and 2,088 quoted. Pick a work week (Monday to Friday, Monday to Saturday, Sunday to Thursday or every day) and subtract the days off you expect, such as public holidays, in the “Days off to subtract” box. The calculator does not know your holidays.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average number of work hours in a month?
For a whole year, divide the total work hours by 12. In 2026 on Monday to Friday at 8 hours a day, the year has 2,088 hours, an average of 174 hours per month before days off.
Why does the number of work hours change from month to month?
Months have different numbers of weekdays, so the working-day count changes too. In 2026 on Monday to Friday, February has 20 working days and March has 22, so February has fewer hours at the same daily length.
How do I work out hours for a part-time schedule?
Enter your actual hours per workday, including decimals. For example, 4.5 hours over 22 working days is 99 hours.
Does a leap year change the result?
Yes. February gets an extra day, and the weekday count for the year can change as well. February 2024 has 29 days and 21 Monday-to-Friday days, and the whole year has 262 weekdays.
What happens if my days off are more than my working days?
A warning appears and the result shows 0. Check the days off figure and the work week you chose.
Is the work hours in a month calculator free, and is anything I type uploaded?
Yes, it is free and needs no account or sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.
Can I print or share a calculation?
Yes. Print / save as PDF creates a one-page record with the inputs, results, calculation steps and the date. Copy link copies a page address that stores every input, so the same calculation can be reopened later or sent to someone else.
